BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS MILK BATH MARATHON IN LEXINGTON CHATEAU
In 2019 I was asked to take part is a very special photo project. One that I knew would be extremely near and dear to my heart.
My Pink Navigator is a local organization who’s mission is to eliminate barriers and provide structure in the lives of breast cancer patients through education and navigational support. The founder (Bobbie) and one of her gals on the board (Kristen, whom I had photographed right before she was diagnosed in 2017) were discussing ideas for their upcoming event when they came up with the fun idea to create a calendar filled with joyfully vibrant images of breast cancer survivors in their own unique milk bath settings.
I’m sad to say that I’ve unfortunately lost loved ones to breast cancer. My mother lost her mom to breast cancer, and then went on to survived fourth stage tonsil cancer herself (hallelujah). and have seen what it can do to a person and their family. So when these two ladies reached out to me for help with this, I was absolutely in.
Over the course of 2 days and a total of 13+ hours of shooting in a breathtaking chateau, I was honored to photograph 11 beautifully courageous breast cancer survivors. REAL women of different shapes, colors, sizes and diagnoses. All with unique backgrounds, stories and scars. Although I was only able to spend about an hour with each woman, it was amazing to photograph them and learn a little about their journeys. To hear only a hint of what they had each been through, yet they were all willing to embrace their post-cancer bodies, become vulnerable in front of my camera, and allow themselves to radiate beauty and vitality. I’m so glad they did too, because just look at what we created!
Needless to say it was an incredible experience, and it was an honor to have had a hand in documenting this time in each of these women’s lives.
